Charming Windsor

For larger shops or a cultural trip, nearby Windsor is a must. It is a historic market town and unparished area in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, with Windsor Castle at its heart.

Windsor Castle is the historic residence of the British Royal Family and the oldest castle in continuous occupation in the world. The castle is surrounded by stunning grounds and offers an impressive number of pathways.

Ascot

Founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, Ascot is one of the greatest racecourses in the world.

It was while Queen Anne was out riding on the edge of Windsor Great Park that she noticed a natural clearing near the village of East Cote, now called Ascot. Queen Anne ordered a course to be laid out 'for horses to gallop at full stretch' and so the Royal Racecourse was born. The first four-day Royal Meeting was held in June 1768 and it has continued to the present day.

Today Ascot Racecourse stages 27 days of the highest quality flat and National Hunt racing throughout the year. Royal Ascot is internationally renowned as a sporting and social occasion, where tradition, pageantry, fashion and style all meet in a glorious setting.

The Temple of Augustus

These ruins, also known as Leptis Magna, consist of a spectacular series of ancient pillars – a snippet of the ancient world by the edge of Virginia Water in Surrey.

The Roman columns arrived in the United Kingdom from Libya around 1830 and stand as a monument to the arrogance of the colonial age. The real site of Leptis Magna is now a UNESCO world heritage site and the remaining ruins are among the best-preserved in the Mediterranean.
